Totes about the #Goats

So it’s been a while (errrr…. 6 months!), but life gets crazy and this is what happens.  I do have an update to my Leader in Me journey (and it’s a GOOD one!) but I can’t exactly publish that yet. So before I get ahead of myself, let’s chat about what on earth goats have to do with anything.

#GOATS

I wouldn’t call myself agriculturally inclined, in any sense of the word.  In fact, plants don’t even like me. Farm animal interaction includes a little too much awareness of life cycle and bodily function for my rather sensitive nature. But what I do love is children’s literature.  What I am passionate about is global awareness from an early age.  What I can do is read a BOOK about goats with my students as the introduction to our crazy journey into global citizenship each year.

It’s been a growing literature adventure list, but over the past few years I’ve collected quite a few books which relate to the theme of global citizenship through micro-financing, agricultural gifting, and leadership traits of initiative, compassion, grit, and teamwork.

How does the gift of a goat become schooling for a girl?  Read to find out!

After hearing about goats, hens, rabbits, fish, and so on for a while, my amazing third grade team of teachers is now ready this year to make our Project Based Learning focus: GOATS! (not only goats, actually, but global citizenship.)

Here are our background and guiding questions:

  1. What does global citizenship mean to you?
  2. How can you as a student increase awareness to the public around you?
  3. How can we as a class create a sense of global citizenship in our community?

SPOILER ALERT!** Our kick-off event MIGHT just include actual goats. At the SCHOOL! I mean, really. This is my life.

So stay tuned my friends, because in only a few short days, I’m heading to Haiti with some awesome colleagues.  And we are gonna hang out with…. wait for it……. GOATS! (didn’t see that one coming, did ya?)  I have a video camera, and I’ll be in an agricultural setting.  This should be good.  I’m excited!
